GRIDIRON AMERICA is the second flag football program undertaken by Capital Area Team Sports, Inc. ("CATS"), a non-profit organization founded in 1995.
Initially founded as a men's softball organization, CATS original flag football program (the Independent Flag Football League) was launched in 2002 as a means for our softball program's players to stay in condition during off-season periods. Instead, the league quickly surpassed softball in terms of popularity, making it our flagship program.
Over the course of its nine year run, the IFFL developed a reputation of being among the best operated contact flag football leagues in the United States. Despite its success, the league's operations were wound down in 2010 - not due to a lack of interest but because its leadership moved onto other projects. Those projects now complete, the "founding fathers" of that league have returned with GRIDIRON AMERICA, taking a new approach to the game we love.
With GRIDIRON AMERICA, CATS hopes to bring its new program to the similar level of prominence as our original league, providing a fun but competitive activity for participants. We strive to develop a unique style of flag football, with unique playing rules that give us a distinct style all our own. On the field, we hope to provide an exciting, fast-paced, enjoyable experience for participants. And off the field, CATS prides itself on its organizational expertise, providing teams and players alike with the best overall experience possible.
With GRIDIRON AMERICA, CATS will place emphasis on ensuring that competition on the field is balanced, tempered with a spirit of sportsmanship. While our players battle on the gridiron, when games end they often band together - participating as teammates elsewhere, or just getting drinks in a post-game celebration at a local watering hole.
